What is an idiom?

An idiom is a phrase or expression which represents a figurative meaning often quite different from the literal meaning attached to the words presented. The words or elements of the idiom don’t make sense in and of themselves. They are atypical but universally represent a universally understood significance which is not obvious to someone who tries to decipher the meaning of the words just as written or said.

Some examples of idioms are:

  • To be on the fence or up in the air – to be undecided
  • Don’t spill the beans or let the cat out of the bag – Don’t reveal the secret.
  • The ball is in your court – It’s your turn to make a move.
  • To kill two birds with one stone – to take care of two things by one action.
  • It’s a piece of cake! – It’s very easy.
  • You hit the nail on the head! – You´re absolutely correct!

Idioms are best understood in context. They offer a deeper understanding of a language and culture. They can be either formal or informal colloquialisms which offer means of creative expression and unique ways of conveying meaning. Idioms can make both your conversations and written communication sound more relaxed and familiar. The use of idioms will make you sound more like a native speaker.

You will find that getting familiar with idioms will allow you to understand and be understood more in business, as well as in everyday situations. Using idioms on language tests such as IELTS or TOEFL can add flavor to your self-expression – both oral and written and can help boost your score.
